At DRI we look at our customer’s homes as though it were a yacht on the water. As for the expense if you had the money invested in a boat that you have in your home it would be a Yacht! If you had a yacht that had a leak what would you do for it?
Think about the value of your yacht? If you were to sell it would it be worth more money with or without a leak? Yachts have bilge pumps which are like sump pumps and they work well for an emergency where a lot or rain is coming in or a hole has caused a leak. The limitations on pumps are that they depend on power and supervision. If the pump fails to start and you are away from your yacht it sinks and if you are on vacation away from your house the basement floods.
If you wanted to fix a hole on your yacht would you try to paint over the hole? Obviously not while water was coming in but if the hole was just above the water level and only leaked when the boat was heavy loaded or when turning one way or another would you just paint over the hole and pretend it was fixed? People who’s basement only leaks when very heavy rains occur often do just that thinking they have solved the problem but what really happens is when it rains again the paint peels off and the water returns.
Would you try to put a cork in the hole from the inside? People caulk cracks in their walls all the time only to have it leak again the next storm and for the same reason that the paint failed. The pressure of the water is on the outside of the boat same as on your basement or crawlspace walls.
If you were to patch your yacht at a yacht repair shop what would they do? First they have to get the boat dry on the outside by lifting it out of the water. A boat looks good in the water and removing from the water makes it look not so good. The next thing they do is locate where the water was getting in. Then they clean, prep the surface and apply a waterproof patch on the outside? Why would they do it that way? Water pushes against the outside of the boat constantly so by patching the outside the pressure helps to keep the patch in place.
To properly water proof your basement we have to dig out the area where the water is coming in. This makes the house look funny because like the boat out of water it is not natural but it is necessary to make the proper repair. Then the surface is cleaned and Barrier P Membrane ™ is applied. This is the water proof patch that keeps the water from coming back in. It keeps the walls from becoming wet from the ground water. Once the job is finished, the landscaping has been restored, your home stays dry. No sump pumps no damp mildew smell and no mold.
It isn’t the process, it isn’t the technical function of the Barrier Dual Drainage Waterproofing System ™ it is the result that counts. This is a typical email we receive from customers all over the US:
“Hey Guys
Hope you all had a great holiday. With all the rain, snow and anything
else mother nature threw at us, our basement is still dry.”
John
